Rwanda: Life Is a Struggle for Parents With Children With Mental Disabilities

When Venessa Mukamusana gave birth to Cyubahiro, her fifth child, in 2004, he looked like a normal, healthy baby boy. However, one year later the now 48-year-old mother from Karongi realized that her son wasn't developing properly. It quickly became clear that he could not walk or talk.

She took him to the hospital but was told nothing much could be done. It was a frustrating realization, and Mukamusana used to cry a lot and hide the boy from the public.
