Liberia: Constitutional Tussle - Information Minister Defends School Closure

Monrovia — What appears to be a hull and pull is likely to begin between the Executive and legislative branches of government. The Liberian constitution provides three distinct and equal branches of government with the Legislature considered the first of the three followed by the Judiciary and the Executive.

The constitutional tussle is likely to grow out of decision by Education Minister George Werner to ignore a decision by the plenary of the House of Representatives ordering him to withdraw his June 5, 2015 communication to the Registrar of the West African Examinations Council, requesting the Accra based Sub-Regional Test body to defer from 2015 to 2016 the administering of the WASSCE and WAEC Test to 9th and 12th graders in Liberia.
