It was on May 5, 2003 Samuel Sam Bockarie, a fearless commander of RUF, Revolutionary United Front of Sierra Leone, who closely associated with Charles Taylor, former President of Liberia and head of the NPFL, was killed in the dark forest of Nimba County in controversial circumstances.
Several accounts of his death emerged then. An official government statement at the time said he was killed on the battle front in the Ivory Coast where he was said to be fighting alongside dissident forces. Another said he resisted arrest and was killed. An unofficial account said he was killed by NPFL fighters acting on the instruction of Mr. Taylor. However, twelve years after the death of the man so feared, insiders (those who were privy and were on the scene of happenings) are beginning to share their thoughts on how it happened, where the orders came from and who carried on the orders.
