It should come as no surprise to anyone that the Supreme Court of the United States, SCOTUS, for short, ruled the way it did - declare same-sex marriages as a human right to be protected by law. The signs have been glaring since 2013 when the Defense of Marriage Act, DOMA was declared unconstitutional by the same court.

DOMA, signed into law by the then President, Bill Clinton, explicitly defines marriage. In its Section Three, it reads: "In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, or of any ruling, regulation, or interpretation of the various administrative bureaus and agencies of the United States, the word 'marriage' means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word 'spouse' refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife."
