Liberia: Executive Officials Shamed At the Capitol -Thrown Out of Budget Hearings for Failure

Hearing session of the National Draft Budget before joint legislative Budget Committee at the national Legislature yesterday took a dramatic turn when members of the committee asked some heads of ministries and agencies of government in attendance to leave the session for their failure to sufficiently defend budget line items allotted to their respective institutions.

The executive officials ordered out of the legislative Budget Committee room include ministers of the Ministries of Internal Affairs, Agriculture and the director-general of the Civil Service Agency. Agriculture Minister Dr. Florence Chenoweth, Internal Affairs Minister Morris Dukuly and the director general of the CSA boss were all invited to address the joint committee of the National Legislature so as to provide cogent information regarding how the amounts applied for in the draft budget by their ministries and agencies could be defend for considerations by the joint budget committee of the legislature.
