Zimbabwe: Fugitive 'Rapist' Nabbed, Jailed 4 Years

A 28 year old man who was on the run after being charged with attempted rape was later found and has since been dragged to the courts where he was convicted this week.

Tapiwa Mutsauri of village 2A Chishuku Lalapanzi attempted to rape a 19 year old woman who was on her way from school but failed after she got help from members of the public.

Mutsauri who was on a police wanted list was later arrested after a tip off. He was found in possession of a twist of Mbanje when searched at the police station.

On Thursday he appeared before Gweru magistrate, Shortgame Masaiwona charged with two counts of attempted rape and unlawful use or possession of dangerous drugs respectively.

Masaiwona sentenced Mutsauri to an effective four years in jail on the attempted rape charge but discharged him on the possession of dangerous drugs rap.

Prosecutors told the court that on March 18, 2014 at around 6 PM the complainant was going home coming from Chishuku Secondary School where she did extra lessons.

Mutsauri followed her and proposed love but she turned him down.

When the two reached a dense bush area, Mutsauri held the woman's right leg and she lost balance and fell down.

Mutsauri pulled the woman's skirt and undergarments to knee level but she screamed for help.

She was rescued by two people who were passing by and a report was made to the police.

Mutsauri however, started evading the police when they looked for him after the attempted rape report.

On July 3 this year, police were tipped that Mutsauri was at Chishuku Business Centre.

Two police officers located and arrested him. When they searched him at the police station they discovered a twist of dagga in his trousers' pocket.
