Liberia: Legislature Limits Education Budget to Salaries, Minister Hit

Monrovia — The Ministry of Education will begin the 2015/2016 fiscal year budget with money only for salary payment for its staff and no money for operational cost. The ministry whose budget is US$80 million (eighty million United States Dollars), according to Representative Moses Kollie (UP-District #3 Lofa County), was made available in the 2015/2016 budget but only money for salary payment will be released by the Finance Ministry until the Minister can appear before the Joint Budget Committee on Ways, Means, Finance and Development planning and Public Account and Expenditure.

Representative Kollie said: "The Minister needs to come before the committee to tell us how money allotted in the past budget for the Ministry was used, and programs he has in place for the fiscal year 2015/2016 for the Ministry of Education. The Ministry has a 20% increment in its budget now compared to the past year's budget; but the Minister need to come and defend it."
