Rwanda: New Police Unit to Improve Fight Against Corruption

One of the major challenges when it comes to prosecuting suspects of embezzlement or corruption in awarding public tenders, has so far been the lack of evidence to bring the culprits to court. As a result, only a fraction of the cases are actually judged, and as a result little of the embezzled money is ever recovered.

The creation of an Anti-Corruption and Public Fund Embezzlement Unit within the police might bring a change to this vexing situation. Assistant commissioner of the police (ACP) Theos Badege, who is also the commissioner at the Criminal Investigation Department, said the new unit will increase the synergy among institutions dealing with anti-corruption and embezzlement.
