Malawi: Teenage Girl Dies After Shaft of Maize Mill Hooked Her Wrapper

A 15-year-old Malawian girl in Ntchisi district has died after shaft of a maize mill hooked her wrapper (Chitenje) which she put on her neck.

Police have identified the deceased as Bertha Khisi of Chikhungwa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi.

Malawi24 has learnt that the incident happened on Monday August 3 2015 at around 7AM at Gwaza in the area of Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi.

Police report indicate that the deceased went to pound maize at the maize mill where she met her fate.

When the maize mill was running, the wrapper fell over the shaft of the maize mill and tied her strongly against the shaft up to the extent of cutting her head and died on spot.

The scene was visited by both police and medical officer from Ntchisi District Hospital who certified death as due to severe loss of blood after complete cut of the head.
