Guinea Bissau: Statement By the Spokesperson On the Current Political Situation in Guinea Bissau

press release

Brussels — The most recent political developments in Guinea Bissau may put at risk the positive dynamics of reconstruction and democratic consolidation of the country observed so far. All the democratic forces and institutions in Guinea Bissau need to work together now to overcome differences and to ensure that the country's reconstruction continues peacefully and productively for the benefit of all citizens.

Peaceful and credible elections in 2014 brought the country back on a path of democratic governance and paved the way for renewed economic and social development. The international community, including the EU, has been heavily engaged in supporting this process, encouraging the national authorities to pursue reforms and policies necessary to consolidate democracy, improve governance and relaunch the development of the country.
