South Sudan: Restrictions On River and Air Movement to Malakal Lifted

Juba, South Sudan — Restrictions on the movement of barges on the River Nile, as well as clearances to use the Malakal airstrip, which had affected the delivery of life-saving assistance to vulnerable people in Malakal in Upper Nile State, have been lifted.

No barges arrived in Malakal during July and no flights were able to land at the airstrip from the end of June until 7 August. From 15 to 24 July, WFP/UNHAS helicopters were able to land inside the UNMISS base, however, they were only able to bring in minimal supplies.
