Tabitha Akirapa, a 60-year-old widow from Kidoko village, Molo sub-county in Tororo district, is a happy woman.

When she left her ancestral home several years ago to search for her mother, little did she know that the journey would end up in one of the islands on Lake Victoria. Akirapa had received information that her biological mother, Abisagi Anyango, who passed on in 2013, had settled on Buggala Island, in Kalangala district. Buggala is the biggest of the 84 islands on Lake Victoria. It is not only where Kalangala district headquarters are situated, but where most of the economic activities such as farming take place.
