Tanzania: Mwecau Initiates Doctorate in Education Programme

Moshi — Mwenge Catholic University (MWECAU) has initiated a Doctor of Philosophy in Education programme that is set to start this September.

Mwecau Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Dr Modest Levira said, in his letter to stakeholders that the three year course will specialize on three areas, Curriculum Studies, Educational Administration and Planning as well as Educational Assessment and Evaluation.

Dr Levira said the varsity has designed classes to be every Saturday, a means that would enable employees not to forfeit work, instead carry on with jobs while upgrading their education.

He said that it is a huge opportunity for teachers and other people with master's degree in education to tap.

Mwecau, owned by The Catholic Church is a successor of St Joseph's Teachers College which opened to Diploma in Education courses in 2001 before being transformed into Mwenge University College of Education (Mwuce), as a constituent college of St Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT).

It became a fully fledged university September last year. Students who were admitted to Mwuce for the academic year 2014/2015 were newly enrolled and undertook their studies under the new varsity.

Construction work for the institution started in 1995 with financial assistance from MISEREOR, an organization under the auspices of the Bishops' Conference of Germany.

Dr Levira said Mwecau has a mission to provide quality and integral education to the society of Tanzania and beyond and that it has an open access equal opportunities policy for both staff and students.

The institution was set up in response to government request for private organizations to become involved in secondary and higher education and has so far touched lives of many people both within and outside the country.

Other courses offered by Mwecau include a two-year Masters' Degree in Education, with specialization in Curriculum Studies and Instruction; Educational Assessment and Evaluation; Educational Planning and Administration; Professional Practice in Secondary Education and Professional Practice in Higher Education areas.

It also offers Master of Business Administration in Finance, Accounting, Marketing and Human Resource Management.
