President Jacob Zuma wrote to National Police Commissioner, General Victoria Phiyega on the 20th of August 2015, informing her of his intention to institute an enquiry into the allegations of misconduct and/or lack of fitness for the office that she occupies and/or her ability to execute her duties efficiently with regard thereto, or any other conduct which may have a bearing on her position as Head of the Police Service, in terms of Section 9(1) to (2) read with Section 8(1) to (8) of the South African Police Act 68 of 1995, as amended (the "Act").

The President also afforded General Phiyega an opportunity to make written representations to him by 26 August 2015, as to why she should not be placed on suspension pending the outcome of the enquiry in terms of Section 8(3)(a) of the Act.
