Ethiopia: Ministry to Devise Efficient Pesticide Management

Ethiopia is an ancient country where farming has been practiced for millennial but until recently, never shifted to modern farming system and still dominantly traditional and subsistence. Hence, utilizing agricultural input must be a norm rather than an option. And among others, using pesticide is believed to increase productivity thereby ensuring food security.

Opening a consultative workshop on a Draft Strategy Document on National Pest Management Support Service yesterday, State Minister Wondirad Mandefro said that for centuries farmers had been maintaining their crops and live stalks based on their indigenous knowledge without any technical support and when extreme events occur as a result of evasive and migrant pests like locust, they faced devastation which left them to be starved.
