Mozambique: Repayment of Urban Poverty Loans 'unsatisfactory'

Maputo — The levels of repayment of loans from the Mozambican government's Urban Poverty Reduction Strategic Programme (PERPU) remains unsatisfactory, according to Manuel Rodrigues, spokesperson for the Coordinating Council of the Ministry of State Administration, meeting in the southern resort of Bilene.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Rodrigues said that, although PERPU was set up four years ago, repayment of the loans has not yet reached even 20 per cent. (This is similar to the repayment problems with its rural equivalent, the District Development Fund, FDD, set up in 2005, except that, with the FDD, the repayment levels are even lower).
