Nigeria: WHO Backs HIV Drugs for All, As Prevention for Those At Risk

Treating all persons living with Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and those at substantial risk such as prostitutes, homosexuals and health workers could help avert more than 21 million deaths and 28 million new infections by 2030.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), yesterday, in a statement, announced that anyone infected with HIV should begin antiretroviral (ARV) treatment as soon as possible after diagnosis. With its "treat-all" recommendation, WHO removes all limitations on eligibility for antiretroviral therapy (ART) among people living with HIV; all populations and age groups are now eligible for treatment.
