Uganda: Surprise-Candidate Mabirizi Talks up His Presidential Bid

With his surprise presidential bid, Elton Joseph Mabirizi, 40, a little-noticed pastor and businessman, is grabbing the spotlight together with The Independents' Coalition (TIC), a loose alliance of about 21 of the 48 presidential aspirants he reportedly heads. Last week, Mabirizi returned to the Electoral Commission his nomination forms and supporting signatures from voters from at least 75 of the 112 districts countrywide. That placed him among 11 aspirants who have so far fulfilled that requirement and moved closer to being nominated in November. In this interview he gave on October 5, Mabirizi discussed with Sadab Kitatta Kaaya his presidential bid and EC's alleged partisan tendencies, among other issues.
