It is easy to imagine the smiles on faces of millions of Chinese men and women over this great piece of news: The Chinese government has decided to reverse the one-child policy that has been in force since 1979 and allow families to have more than one child.
Several reasons have been given for this major reversal, including the dwindling labour force the population has been ageing even as the economy has been booming but surely one of the reasons should be that the authorities, riding the crest of great economic success, feel they can afford to give a generalised bonus to their people.
