Zimbabwe: Don't Rush Urban Tollgates

Former transport and infrastructural development minister, Obert Mpofu, had forcefully pushed for the introduction of urban tolling in order to raise more revenue required to rehabilitate the country's roads as well as constructing new ones. Mpofu was reassigned to another ministry before he could realise his vision, which had been opposed viciously by the motoring public that is already overtaxed.

Recent media reports suggest that government is still to approve the plan under new Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Joram Gumbo. In terms of the plan, government wants to start with a pilot project in the capital city before taking the urban tollgates to other major cities, such as Bulawayo, Mutare, Gweru and Masvingo.
