East Africa: Poor Quality Graduates? Blame It On Lack of Training in Practical Skills

BACKGROUND: Prof Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa is the executive director and principal investigator, Kiira Motors Project, a product of the Makerere University.
He is also Uganda’s Minister of State for Higher Education, Science and Technology.
EDUCATION: He holds a PhD in digital communications and a master’s degree in radio engineering.
EXPERIENCE: Before being appointed minister in March this year, Prof Tickodri-Togboa was deputy vice chancellor of Makerere University in charge of finance and administration.
He taught engineering mathematics and was in charge of the iLabs research project — an Internet based laboratory — that supports conventional laboratories at Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology.
In 2009, he led a team of students who designed the Kiira EV hybrid car, which went for its first public test drive in 2011. The Government is now sourcing $400 million to start production of the Kiira EV.
