South Africa: Release of UJ Students and Workers

The ANC welcomes the decision by the state to withdraw charges against students and workers of the University of Johannesburg. On Friday night the ANC went to Brixton Police Station to assist the effort of securing the release of students and workers who were arrested that day. We believe that normality and academic programme needs to be restored to allow students to prepare and write examinations.

While we believe that the students' demands are legitimate, we discourage students from using violence in advancing their course as it creates an untenable situation of them being branded and charged as criminals.
