Liberia's Maritime Authority Program Ends in Fiasco

In 2012, it was reported that major achievements were made in line with the overall strategic direction of the Liberia Maritime Authority (LMA) in line with President Sirleaf's vision of "Building a Maritime Nation" which has become working theme for the authority. But perhaps the greatest accomplishment that year was the reopening of the Liberia Marine Training Institute (LMTI) after 22 years of closure due to the civil war.

It was the reported thinking of the LMA that in order to embark on a transition to a Maritime Nation, training and capacity development within the sector must be prioritized. The economic benefit the nation stands to accrue when trained and certified seamen find employment is enormous. But the Liberia Marine Training Institute (LMTI) program seems to end in fiasco as students that were trained for the program loiter without making use of the training they got from the program. The Liberia Marine Training Institute (LMTI) closed its door since December 2013 without graduating students who were attending the school.
