Somalia: Two Somali Regional States Sign a Peace Agreement

President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gas of Puntland and President Abdikarim Hussein Guled of Galmudug, along with regional officials, signed a peace agreement on Wednesday (November 2). This provides for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of troops from Galkayo town, the scene of violent clashes over the last two weeks. Officials from both sides expressed optimism that the agreement would finally end the clashes. Galkayo town is divided into two zones, with the northern part forming part of Puntland state, while the southern section under the Galmudug administration.

The agreement was brokered by Federal Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke who described it as a 'turning point'. He called on the two sides to abide by the peace agreement and end the violence, which displaced tens of thousands of people from their homes.
