Liberia: Curbing Adolescent Abuse - Child Right Group Ends Conference

Monrovia — Females, especially teenagers, are always victimized by violence and abuse in most parts of the world with Liberia being of no exception. In some African countries, including Liberia, archaic tradition depicts that females subject themselves to their male counterparts, a practice that continuously violates their rights. The United Nations and other gender groups around the world have over time stood in the vanguard, advocating and ensuring that female rights are protected. But this cannot be totally overcome if female themselves, especially teenagers, are not educated on issues that have the proclivity to create impact on their development.

It is against these backdrops that the second annual Girls Leading our World Leadership Conference was organized, bringing together over one hundred Liberian girls from 25 schools to learn about career development, preventive tool against early and unwanted pregnancy, as well as building self-esteem. Speaking during the conference in Paynesville, under the theme 'Building Self-esteem as teenager', the Executive Director of Messenger for Peace, Gwendolyn Myers, called on young females to be self-confident, even in little things like interactive discussions.
