Tanzania: Experts Fear Disturbing Link Between HIV-Aids and Cervical Cancer

Mwanza — Women living with HIV/Aids run a high risk of contracting cervical cancer a medical expert at Mwanza regional hospital has revealed.

A cervical cancer expert at the Sekouture Regional Hospital, Ms Mwajuma Makala clarified that out of 22 patients diagnosed with cervical cancer at the hospital this year, 15 were HIV positive.

However, Ms Makala couldn't give the scientific cause for the connection between the two sicknesses.

On a different note, according to another cancer expert at the Hospital Ms Joyce Kiratu the hospital can only treat cervical cancer patients in which the disease is detected in its earlier stages.

"We treat cervical cancer patients with cryotherapy which decreases cell growth and reproduction (cellular metabolism) and increase cellular survival; but this is done those who detect the disease in its earlier stages,"she said.
