Uganda: Museveni Shuns Debate

Seven out of eight presidential candidates; Independent's Amama Mbabazi, FDC's Kizza Besigye, Dr Abed Bwanika, Venansius Baryamureeba, Benon Biraro, Joseph Mabirizi, Maureen Kalya have arrived for the first session of the presidential debate at Serena Hotel Kampala.

Meanwhile, NRM Presidential candidate, Yoweri Museveni will not participate in the debate.

Dr Besigye said Mr Museveni's presence and participation in debate was crucial since he has been in power for 30 years and has a lot to explain why Uganda is failing to develop.

" I am happy to attend the debate but the absence of Mr Museveni is unfortunate," he said.

Mr Mbabazi said he intends to use the debate to present what he would do for Ugandans once elected as president.

Asked about the failure by NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Museveni to come for the event, Mbabazi said: "My debate and my campaign is not about individuals. His (Mr Museveni's) presence or absence is not relevant."
