Nigeria: Benue Rerun - Group Asks Mark to Step Aside

21 January 2016

Makurdi — A group under the umbrella of Concerned Idoma Citizens (CIC) has called on former Senate president, David Mark to back out from the Benue South senatorial rerun expected to hold soon. The group said in Makurdi yesterday the time was ripe for Mark to pull out of the race for the senatorial district so that a fresh, preferably younger person can step into his shoes.

Chairman of CIC, Paulinus Okwori, wondered why Mark has chosen to return to the Senate as a floor member, having served as the number three man in the nation for eight years. Okwori posited that it would be honourable for the former Senate president to step aside when the ovation is loudest in the interest of the generality of the Idoma people, who he had served as senator in the past 16 years. The Court of Appeal sitting in Makurdi had in November, last year, sacked Mark and ordered for a fresh election within 90 days.
