For the first time traveller, the idea of applying for a visa conjures the thoughts of Gestapo-style interrogations, a particularly intense audit and some analysis of blood. And while some countries are certainly strict about whom they let take photographs in front of their Unesco World Heritage sites, many nations' visa applications are pretty painless.
To define an element of travelling that seems so forbidding: A visa is an endorsement in a passport that signifies the owner's documents are in order and permit the bearer to travel through the issuing country.
