South Africa: Minister Should Declare Drought a National Disaster

The Democratic Alliance strongly urges that the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs immediately declare a national disaster in terms of sections 23 and 27 of the Disaster Management Act to address the effects of South Africa's worst drought in 23 years that has seen ordinary South Africans without water for protracted periods of time.

To date, 5 provinces have been declared disasters in this regard, namely KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Western Cape, certain districts have been declared disaster zones.
