Nigeria: Seven Die in Lagos Boat Mishap

Lagos — Seven people died while 11 others were rescued from a boat which capsized around Badore area in Lagos yesterday.

The boat which was said to be on its way to Badore from Ijede hit a submerged log while over-speeding.

The 11 persons were rescued by a combined team from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), National Inland Waterways (NIWA), Marine Police, Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and fishermen.

Daily Trust on Sunday gathered that four people drowned while three others died in hospital. The survivors were treated by officials from the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASEMBUS) while bodies of the deceased were deposited at a morgue.

NEMA spokesman in the South-west, Ibrahim Farinloye said: "Minutes after the accident, the zonal coordinator, South West, Dr Bandele Onimode, deployed a rescue team to the scene. NEMA mobilized LASWA, NIWA, Marine police and LASEMA to the area. The incident happened around 10.20am".
