Botswana government has broken ranks with the rest of Africa that wants to withdraw their International Criminal Court (ICC) membership. Addressing the media Vice President Mokgweetsi Masisi said Botswana has opted for a friendly disagreement with the rest of Africa regarding the pulling out of ICC. He said that the African Union is not a state party to the Roman Statues as such does not have any relevance to the agreement.
Masisi, who normally represents President Ian Khama in international gatherings, said that they were not surprised by the gesture as they differed with most African states when ICC wanted to prosecute Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. He said that Botswana is committed to the principles of Roman statues as it is consistent with the role of law and guard against the abuse of state power.
