Will there be a repeat of the incidents like this one at 2015's State of the Nation address by President Jacob Zuma? Police and army have assured that security will be tight, in measures some have described as "paranoid".

Police used stun grenades to disperse EFF and ANC members who clashed on Adderley Street near Parliament on Thursday afternoon.

At least four stun grenades exploded. Pictures from the scene showed people believed to be ANC supporters attacking EFF members with planks broken off public benches.

Some EFF members tried to pull bricks from the paving.
