South Africa: Newborn Found Alive in Pit Toilet

A newborn baby was discovered alive inside a pit toilet in Shaka's Head, near Ballito, on Saturday afternoon with his placenta and umbilical cord still attached to him, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

Netcare911 paramedics were alerted by residents in the area around 16.00, spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said. The child was found near a community centre in the area, she said.

The infant was currently being treated at a nearby hospital.
