Sudan: Three Kidney Patients Die in South Darfur

Nyala — The lack of renal dialysis solutions in South Darfur led to the death of three patients in the Nyala Specialists' Hospital last week. The state Health Ministry flew in solutions on Sunday.

"The dialysis machines in the hospital stopped working more than two weeks ago, after the depletion of the solutions," Esam Abdelrahman, Deputy Chairman of the South Darfur Renal Failure Patients Association told reporters in the state capital Nyala on Sunday.

"More than 30 patients travelled to Khartoum in search of treatment," he said, accusing the South Darfur Health Ministry of failing to provide the required dialysis solutions in time.

A shipment of five tons of renal dialysis solutions arrived at Nyala on Sunday.

In a press statement, the state Ministry of Health said that its Department of Medical Supplies rented an aircraft to bring in the life-saving solutions for the more than more than 110 patients of the hospital's renal dialysis centre.
