Kenya: May the Best Team Win

editorial

Excitement is building up ahead of the Kenya Premier League derby between perennial rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi, on Sunday.

The two are the most celebrated clubs in the country. Champions Gor have won the league title 15 times, while the Leopards have taken it 13 times.

Being community-based clubs, the two have had to source for sponsors to make ends meet. This season, and for the next five seasons, both teams will be comfortable, each having signed a lucrative sponsorship deal with betting firm SportPesa.

The two clubs have been living from handouts for the five decades they have existed as they lack proper governance structures. Frequent hooliganism by their fans has not helped matters.

It is a high time they transformed themselves into self-sustaining units. For now, may the best team win Sunday's 'Mashemeji Derby.'
