Africa: Econet's Soon-to-Be Pay TV Arm Buys Free-to-Air English Premier League Rights

London — Although the English Premier League pay TV rights are seen as absolutely crucial in the battle for African Pay TV subscribers, their Free-To-Air equivalent rights have not really made the earth move for anyone. Russell Southwood looks at this new deal and how it might affect the sports viewing landscape.

Focused on delivering leading sports events, live action and exciting highlights to fans, Kwesé Sports is a key component of Kwesé TV, which will begin rolling out its media entertainment services later this year, on both internet and satellite based platforms. Kwesé TV is wholly owned by Econet Media. It has been exclusively awarded free-to-air broadcasting rights to the popular Premier League for the next three seasons. The agreement covers markets across Sub-Saharan Africa (excludes North Africa) and comes into effect from August 2016.
