Africa: Celebrating World Environment Day, UN Environment Programme and Georgetown University Launch Law Fellowship

press release

Washington D.C. — New program will strengthen environmental law in developing countries

In the lead up to World Environment Day, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Georgetown University Law Center have announced a new fellowship for environmental lawyers practicing in the public sector (ministries or the judiciary) in developing countries.

The UNEP- Georgetown Law Center Global Environment & Sustainability Law Fellows Program will provide the opportunity to earn a Masters of Law Degree (LL.M.) in Environmental Law and strengthen the environmental capacity of lawyers globally.

Lawyers selected for the program will take courses in residence at Georgetown Law's campus in Washington, D.C., engage in research, and gain practical experience in the practice of environmental law. The Fellows will also collaborate in Georgetown's Science Technology and International Affairs program in the School of Foreign Service.

"Georgetown Law is thrilled to be partnering with UNEP in making its world class environmental law program available to lawyers from Africa and other developing nations in the public sector, who will be addressing many of the planet's most challenging ecological and resource problems," said Dean William Treanor.

"We are very pleased to be making this announcement in the context of World Environment Day, the UN's most important day for encouraging global awareness and action for the protection of our environment," said Patricia J. Beneke, Director for the UN Environment Programme's Regional Office for North America. "Receiving this unique degree will not only benefit the national governments of the Fellows selected, but ultimately will impact countries and citizens around the world."

The Fellowship will cover the full cost of tuition, travel and provide a modest stipend for living expenses. The program will welcome two Fellows beginning in the summer of 2017.
