Malawi Establishes Amdc-Supported Task Team On Mining Contract Negotiations

9 June 2016

Lilongwe — The African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) together with the Government of Malawi announced the formation of a contract negotiation task team to support, Malawi's Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, the Honourable Bright Msaka SC, announced on Thursday 2 June in Lilongwe, Malawi.

The announcement was made at the conclusion of a successful workshop as part of the "strengthening the capacity of African governments to negotiate transparent, equitable and sustainable contracts in extractive industries (EI) for broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development" project. This initiative has five beneficiary countries which include Malawi. Thirty-seven participants attended the workshop from various ministries, the Parliament, private sector organizations, civil society organizations and representatives of local communities.

The Department of Mine's Cassius Chirambo presented the main recommendations that emerged from the workshop deliberations, which include the ongoing updating of Malawi's legislation, regulation and policies and capacity building. Wishing the new task team well, Minister Msaka stated: "It is my hope that the minerals of Malawi bring health, happiness and prosperity for all Malawians. This is the responsibility of the people who will negotiate [on Malawi's behalf]. Malawi will be a rich or a poor country depending on what you do."

Note for editors on the Africa Mining Vision:

Formally adopted by African heads of state in 2009, the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) is the continent's own response to tackling the paradox of great mineral wealth existing side by side with pervasive poverty. Simply put, the AMV outlines the roadmap to the transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to underpin broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development in Africa.
