The ruling Unity Party is gearing up for a convention encumbered with scaring ripples necessitated by high-profiled resignations of top partisans, inner party frictions, the Global Witness bribery allegation to which top party officials are linked, standard-bearer's alleged support for another candidate other than the vice standard-bearer who has declared his intentions and many other issues.
In fact, critics say the UP may not survive the current turbulence which could equally be compounded by an expected "battle for the chairmanship position" considering the fact Secretary General Wilmot Paye has declared his intention for the position while Madam Madina Wesseh and Gender Minister Julia Duncan Cassel, big players in the party, are reportedly eyeing the position as well. As Standard-bearer position which is also contested by Vice President Joseph Boakai and former Foreign Minister Toga McIntosh Gaywea, analysts say the chairmanship contest could certainly become a "battle of the fittest" because of the different competing interests.
