South Africa: Accused Convicted and Sentenced for Carjacking

On Monday 20 June 2016 Mfundo Lushaba (21) from KwaDabeka Township was convicted and sentenced 15 years imprisonment for carjacking by the Pinetown Regional Court. The accused was further sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. On 1 April 2014 the victim aged 60 was sitting in his Toyota Double Cab bakkie outside Pinetown Post Office waiting for his wife who was in the Post Office when he was approached by an armed suspect who demanded car keys. The victim was shot in the upper arm and his vehicle was stolen.

A police vehicle that was in the vicinity responded to the complaint. The police chased the hijacked vehicle until it crashed against a tree in New Germany. The suspect was found in possession of unlicensed firearm and was arrested. He made several court appearance until he was convicted and sentenced.
