Somalia: Al Shabaab Attacks AU Military Base in Somalia

Heavily armed fighters belonging to Al Shabaab have launched a massive attack on African Union forces' base near Marka city, the regional capital of Lower Shabelle region.

The militants raided the AMISOM base at El-Jalle area, located some 6 kilometers away from the port town of Marka. Reports that both sides have used heavy and small weapons.

The attack began with mortar shells targeted on AMISOM base, followed by heavy exchange of gunfire between Al Shabaab fighters and AU troops, according to local residents.

At least one civilian is known to have been killed in the attack on AMISOM outpost near Marka town. There was no immediate confirmation of casualties on both rival sides.
