Ethiopia: U.S. Announces More Aid to Ethiopia

The United States has announced nearly 35 million dollars in additional humanitarian assistance to help the people of Ethiopia face the impacts of the worst drought in fifty years. The funding will support USAID's UN and NGO partners in providing humanitarian aid, including more than 6,000 metric tonnes of supplementary and therapeutic foods to help an estimated one million people suffering from moderate and severe acute malnutrition. The new funding will also increase access to safe water and sanitation facilities, and promote hygienic practices in drought-affected communities.

With this announcement, the United States has now provided nearly 774 million dollars since the beginning of the 2015 financial year in humanitarian assistance and continues to be the single largest humanitarian donor to the people of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government had mobilised 380 million dollars from its own coffers in response to the natural disaster. An estimated 1.4 billion dollars is required to mitigate the severe impact of the drought for the 10 million or so Ethiopians affected.
