Mauritius: Prison Service and Beach Authority Sign MoU for the Upliftment of Belle Mare Public Beach

A Memorandum of Understanding for the upliftment of Belle Mare public beach was signed on 14 September 2016 between the Mauritius Prison Service and the Beach Authority at the Prison Headquarters in Beau Bassin in the presence of the Commissioner of Prisons, Mr. P. Appadoo, and the General Manager of Beach Authority, Dr. D. Bissessur, General Manager of Beach Authority.

The upliftment of Belle Mare Public Beach project has been developed under the scheme "Pay Back Mauritius" whereby detainees are given the opportunity to make reparation for the harm they have done through their offending. Under the scheme, detainees are encouraged to make constructive use of their time in prison and engage in a project for the conservation and protection of the environment of public beaches including upliftment and landscaping works.
