E Sesay — The decision by the Energy Ministry to increase electricity tariff without prior public consultation and sensitisation has caused a huge public backlash, not least from a consortium of 182 civil society organisations who have petitioned the decision, thus averring that the calculation of 15 percent GST (Goods and Services Tax) lacks transparency.

Team leader of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission to Sierra Leone, John Wakeman-Linn, last week told journalists that the institution would not necessarily advise the government to increase its tax rate but to expand it and develop the country's economy.
