The St Thomas School for the Deaf was a beacon of hope for the parents who had children with disabilities in the 1960s until recently. Within the first 10 years of existence, the school became a shining star and a centre of excellence in the Border Region in the care and the education of deaf children, that was what the Members of Parliament (MPs) heard from St Thomas School's Principal, Mr Zwelandile Jizana, in Woodlands Mission near Stutterheim yesterday.
The school was established in 1962 by the Roman Catholic Church and according to Mr Jizana, it developed into a multi-purpose school within the first 10 years of its existence. "Although the school was established for deaf (hearing impaired) Xhosa children, it became accessible to all the children - offering education for deaf and normal children," said Mr Jizana.
