Rwenzori sub-region is an area prone to armed conflict, with a long history of brutal rebellion. Five main insurgent actors stand out, The Rwenzururu rebellion 1962-1982, Rwenzururu Freedom Movement (RFM) together with the Katebwa Alliance 1982-1987, The National Resistance Army, (NRA) 1984-1986, National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (NALU) 1988-1994, Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) 1996-2002, and now Esyomango Sya Rwenzururu alias Kirumila Mutima militia incursions 2014 to date.
The mention of July 5, 2014, brings awful memories in the minds of people in the sub region. On that day, about a hundred people lost their lives in the deadly militia attacks on 13 locations in Ntoroko, Kasese and Bundibugyo districts. The systematic attacks, in a cult-like outfit, happened simultaneously. The ethnic and cultural identity of the militia is not in dispute.
