Ethiopia: Honouring Gada System

Last week it was a joyful week for all Ethiopians because the indigenous democratic socio-political system of the Oromo people, Gada System, has been inscribed in UNESCO's top world heritage list. The 11th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage had been busy in sorting out various heritages that had been collected for inscription by the committee.

The moment when the exciting news came out of the meeting hall cheering waves of happiness took possession of the hearts and minds of fellow citizens and foreigners who had been longing to see this day. Many had joined together to share the awaited victory, from Presidents down to state Chiefs. Higher officials as well as experts and ordinary fellow citizens couldn't help expressing their contentment.
