Tanzania: Joy As 5,678 Prisoners Obtain Presidential Pardon

President John Magufuli yesterday pardoned 5,678 prisoners on the occasion of the 55th Independence anniversary, Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Major General Projest Rwegasira, announced yesterday.

In a statement released yesterday in Dar es Salaam, the PS said that the reprieve of the prisoners came after one out of six (1/6) offences of the pardoned detainees were reduced and thus leading to freeing of 1,340 while the rest 4,338 remain in prison to serve the remaining offences. Major Rwagasira said the reprieve was approved by Dr Magufuli yesterday during the celebrations to mark the 55th Independence Day.
