Nigeria: Pressure Mounts for Abia Speaker to Resign

23 March 2017

Umuahia — A groundswell of agitation has started building up against the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Hon Chikwendu, with calls for him to resign following the revelation that he was in 2013 indicted and delisted from the Nigerian Bar by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) over a matter of "stealing and theft."

The critical mass of the agitators championing Kalu's resignation is led by six concerned citizens of Isiala Ngwa South state constituency, which the embattled speaker represents in the state legislature. They said their eyes were opened to the speaker's hidden past after reading "a shocking publication" in THISDAY edition of February 27, 2017, which contained extracts of the direction given on September 9, 2013, by (LPDC).
